Joan Baez was born January 9, 1941 in Staten Island, New York. Joan was known for being a American folk singer and political activist. Joan had a soprano voice and she went on tour with Bob Dylan in the 1970s. Joan was known for her social causes, including civil rights, nonviolence and for her protest, she wrote songs about all the political Issues she believed in.
Joan was an artist, an anti-war activist, and a girl who just stood up for what she believed in no matter what. Joan was deeply influenced by poverty at a young age, she also started to realize and care about the way that Baghdad was being treated. Joan became a very famous folk song writer, her music career truly became big 1959 when she sang at the Newport Folk Festival. When the war in Vietnam and the Civil Rights struggle in America both became big, Joan started to write more and more about political issues, she preformed “We Shall Overcome” at Martin Luther King’s March On Washington.
When Joan was young her father was a physicist and they had to move a lot. They moved from towns in the US, France, Switzerland, Italy, and the Middle East where they finally stayed. Her childhood affected the way she looked at the world and politics. In 1968 Joan married David Harris an Anti-Vietnam war activist, but most of their marriage Joan was imprisoned and they divorced in 1973 but Harris lead her into country music.
